What is the meaning of life?

I don't seem to find any meaning in life... The whole of Ecclesiastes clearly shows us that there is no meaning in life. ALL IS VANITY!! It shows that all meaning is destroyed due to the end result of death. Everything "under the sun" seems to be in vain.

No doubt there might be satisfaction in life such as doing fulfilling Jobs, love in the family, caring for friends. But is there a meaning to it?

I now guess that the meaning of life on earth must lie in something not "under the sun"
Maybe to sort us into where we go for eternity?

  1. hmm, but you know i think that when we do something, or get into something, take entering a new school for example (which is something 'under the sun') and we have God's peace in our heart, it is like God's confirmation on what we are doing, and from this i suppose we know that we are essentially going into this for Him. sorta like glorifying His name, even for simple stuff. and when this happens, as we do it FOR HIM, we end up doing/finishing it BY HIM. and maybe thats where our meaning in life comes about?

like, King Solomon felt that he lived his life attaining everything that he wanted under the sun. yet he felt that there was no meaning in life and everything seemed to be done in vain. he felt this way after his wisdom was corrupted and he didn't really do what God wanted him to do anymore. however, in the beginning, when he first received God's wisdom, he did whatever he felt he should do, and it came naturally too, he didn't feel such feelings of dissatisfaction, right? :D

so i think that when we receive wisdom from God, we'll just know what to do, how to go about doing it. whether we are doing the dishes, or doing homework, or going into something new, with His peace in our hearts, we'll find meaning in life, even if it is something mundane, cos we do all things FOR and BY HIM. YAY! :D

  2. I guess you might find it meaningful and satisfying when you do it for Daddy, but isnt it just a feeling, an emotion?? I find that there is a difference between meaningful and true meaning. True meaning can only come from above our creator, any meaning that we self create is not true meaning.

  3. personally i've always thought- for non-christians there is no real meaning, for christians, our purpose/meaning in life (the reason why we aren't zapped up to heaven immediately after receiving christ already) is to help save the other ppl remaining on earth...

but then clement was saying, then why doesnt God just stop the reproduction of people! Why do people still have to come to earth...

  4. First and foremost, yes, we are under the sun, and we have things, people, life experiences that are under the sun, but you know, God gave us these things that are under the sun.

And if these are things that are God given, then it is not in vain. There must be a reason, especially under the sun. so, i think Solomon was shortsighted in Ecclesiastes.

  5. Another thing to think about, some non christians do find meaning and purpose in life.....and are happy and contented with life......

  6. Yes Daddy gave us all these things and i do believe that there is a meaning.
Right now its just a journey of finding what it is.
To anonymous: Their meaning is just a feeling and probably created by themselves.
I believe true meaning comes from above.

  7. For me. Life is about our relationship with God. But more importantly, it is love. Before heaven and earth was created, there was father and son (God and Jesus) Before anything was creating, God the father and Jesus existed, and between them was LOVE.

Just as how we were created to be love, life is about God's love for us. In that sense, we can then love others. we can only serve from the overflow of love that we have from God, and not to 'gain' credit or favour, nor is to to 'help' God. Just as how our good works are like filthy rags compared to the perfect sacrifice, God honour it and even uses it to BLESS us even future! It just shows God's l.o.v.e.

This is evident in 1 john.
God is love. not that we loved God, but that He Loved us and sent His son to be the propitiation for our sins.
It also mentions, this is His commandment(of the new testimony) - that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
We love because we first love. =)

That is what life is to me - LOVE
Out of love, God gave Jesus, which is our salvation, grace, and basically everything that mounts up to perfection.
